Reliable environmental journalism helps us understand our changing world

Reliable environmental journalism helps people understand the climate crisis and the impacts of environmental change on people and societies. Vikes supports journalists in producing independent, investigative, and responsible environmental journalism.

The climate crisis, the decline in biodiversity, and environmental conflicts are affecting people’s lives all over the world. Understanding these phenomena requires independent, investigative, and responsible journalism.

Environmental journalism plays a vital role in transmitting information, scrutinizing the exercise of power, and fostering public debate. In many countries, however, reporting on environmental issues can be dangerous: journalists face pressure, threats, and a lack of resources.

Vikes’ Environmental Journalism sub-program supports independent environmental journalism, particularly in regions where environmental issues intersect with human rights, livelihoods, and democracy.

Our work includes, for example
  • trainings on journalistic coverage of climate and environmental issues
  • strengthening investigative journalism skills
  • supporting local journalists and media outlets
  • training on safety and ethical issues
  • building international cooperation

Our goal is to strengthen journalism that highlights the impact of environmental crises on people and societies and helps the public understand complex issues through reliable information.

Independent environmental journalism is an important part of a sustainable and democratic future.
