Vikes promotes quality journalism and emphasises press freedom as a cornerstone of democracy. In-depth journalism often requires travel, but story fees rarely cover travel expenses. That is why Vikes wants to assist journalists on such trips. Through travel grants, we want to support journalism on topics and perspectives that have not crossed the news threshold, despite their newsworthiness. The stories produced with a travel grant should raise awareness among Finnish readers about little reported phenomena or events in the world.
Application deadline: the application for the Travel Grant is opened once a year. The most recent call was conducted in November 2024.
For whom: We award a travel grant to one employed or freelance journalist who is capable of independent travel and travel arrangements.
Amount of the grant: we will reimburse up to €3000 per year for the costs of the trip, such as flights, accommodation and travel expenses.
Purpose of the grant: To be used for journalistic content published in a member media of the Council for Mass Media that is committed to the journalist’s guidelines and whose target audience is in Finland. In addition, a small communication contribution to Vikes is required.
Countries: the trip could be to countries where Vikes operates, such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania, Uganda or Guatemala.
Reporting: free-form report, statement of expenses incurred for the trip and any copies of articles by XX.

Frequently asked questions
Is it allowed to apply for the grant as a work team?
Yes, but we cannot increase the amount. You can split the €3000 for travel expenses for two people.
Can I get extra time for the report if I travel at the end of the year?
Yes, a little. However, we want the report and any receipts in 2025 so that we can get the grant for that year’s accounts. However, the pieces do not have to be completed in 2025.
Will there be more grants?
Yes. We have distributed two travel grants in 2023 and our goal is to distribute a travel grant every year.
