On March 26th, the Gillet Bar & Bistro in Helsinki was filled with friends, supporters and partners of Vikes from different decades. The party was a tribute to the founders and long-standing partners of the Foundation – but also a reminder of why Vikes’ work is more important today than ever.
More than 80 guests attended. Long-time actors and newer ones were able to network and meet each other. The programme included speeches, a musical performance and video presentations from international partners. The afternoon continued with a cocktail party to reminisce about Vikes’ activities and brainstorm future opportunities.
Vikes’ work is more important than ever.
Sari Pelttari Heikka, Chair of the International Committee of the Finnish Journalists’ Union, opened the event by recalling Vikes’ role as a pioneer in the media sector and an enabler of international networking:
Vikes has gone against the grain and has been a persistent reminder of the existence of those whose voices would otherwise not be heard. The Foundation is doing work that should in fact be done by media houses or the state.
In her speach Marikki Karhu, Secretary General of the Development Policy Committee, stressed the importance of Vikes’ work at a time when journalism and international communication are increasingly restricted:
You are not only important – the nature of your work is crucial today. Freedom of expression, democracy and human rights are under unprecedented threat.
Human rights ambassador Rauno Merisaari thanked Vikes for its tenacious work for human rights and a free media and described the development of freedom of expression over the decades.
Jarmo Koponen, Chairman of Vikes’ Board, looked to the future and stressed the power of cooperation:
Working for freedom of expression and human rights is important, but quite few people do anything about it. Those of us who do can achieve a lot together.
Commemorative book: Freedom of expression & human rights
Vikes’ new commemorative book Freedom of Expression & Human Rights (2025), was also published in conjuction with the celebration, bringing together up-to-date information on global freedom of expression and the impact of Vikes’ work around the world.
The book is edited by journalist-authors Kristiina Markkanen and Salla Nazarenko, who have in-depth knowledge of Vikes’ work and have been involved in developing its media education and international activities.
The book can be purchased at upcoming Vikes’ events for €20. For students -20% discount. Proceeds will be used to support Vikes’ work for global freedom of expression. The book is an excellent gift for a newly qualified journalist or a friend, colleague or relative interested in social impact.
