In 2024, Vikes supported the promotion of gender equality and peace journalism in Somalia through training and networking.
Sexual harassment prevention training motivated to concrete changes in the workplace
Gender equality in media houses was strengthened thanks to workshops specifically aimed at men on preventing sexual harassment. Seventy journalists, media gatekeepers and media managers participated in the training sessions.
The workshops provided men with concrete tools for understanding their own role and taking responsibility in preventing harassment. The experiences shared by female journalists during the training increased understanding of the effects and consequences of harassment in work communities.
Following the training sessions, discussions on sexual harassment and workplace culture were initiated at media companies. Organizations adopted new practices, such as staff meetings focused on workplace culture, separate changing rooms were provided for women, and communities developed ethical guidelines to prevent sexual harassment.
Female journalists reported that the work environment had improved, and male journalists felt more confident in their ability to address harassment.
Awareness of peace journalism grew among decision-makers
Peace journalism was promoted by strengthening journalist networks and increasing dialogue with decision-makers. Vikes' partners participated in 17 networking events in and outside Somalia during the year. The importance of peace journalism was communicated to the federal government, state ministries of information and parliament.
As part of their peace journalism work, school peace ambassadors produced two short documentaries that reached approximately 200,000 viewers. In addition, media stories they produced were published on the Somali national television channel and on social media. Two televised debates were also organized in 2024, bringing together clan leaders, politicians, youth and women and promoting constructive societal dialogue.
