Kirjoittajalta 15.11.2022Ei kommentteja

Journalism has the capacity to help us understand the world and the complex phenomena in it. Gender equality and equal opportunities are at the core of sustainable development, and high-quality journalism helps deepen our understanding of them. In 2022, the theme of the competition is women, girls and equality.

We are now looking for nominees for the 2022 Award for Development Journalism.

In 2022, the theme is women, girls and gender equality. The winning piece of journalism may address themes such as the status and rights of women and girls, the defence of these issues in developing countries or the progress achieved. Nominate an educational profile piece, a piece of investigative journalism, a television programme or perhaps a podcast for the award.

Journalistic content intended for the Finnish audience, committed to the Guidelines for Journalists and published in the media between 1 December 2021 and 30 November 2022, can be nominated for the award. The content must be published in Finnish, Swedish, Sámi languages or English.

Anyone can nominate recipients for the award between 1 November and 9 December 2022 at vikes.fi/kehitysjournalismipalkinto (in Finnish).

The winner will be selected by an independent jury and announced in January 2023. The winner will receive a EUR 3,000 cash prize, in addition to which a number of candidates may receive honourable mentions. The award is taxable income for the recipient.

In the jury’s view, development journalism is content that addresses global sustainable development themes in a quality manner, reshapes the opinions and attitudes of the public and offers new viewpoints to the realities of developing countries. The jury hopes to receive, in particular, nominations representing innovative forms of journalism from all fields of journalism. Non-fiction books may, however, not be entered into the competition.

The Finnish Red Cross, the Finnish Foundation for Media and Development Vikes, the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation and the Union of Journalists in Finland have established the award to highlight high-quality and innovative journalistic publications that explore global themes and to increase the visibility of and appreciation for Finnish development journalism. In 2021, the award went to Karoliina Knuuti and Mika Niskanen for their story published in Maailman Kuvalehti on a carbon-neutral country with carbon-hungry people: “Hiilineutraali valtio, jossa asustaa hiilisyöppö kansa – ulkoistammeko päästömme?”
