Journalism has the capacity to help us understand the world and the complex phenomena in it. Sustainable development and migration are some of the burning questions of our time, and high-quality journalism helps deepen our understanding of them. The purpose of the new award is to increase the visibility of development journalism.
The Finnish Red Cross, the Finnish Foundation for Media and Development Vikes, the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation and the Union of Journalists in Finland have established the Development Journalism Award to celebrate high-quality and innovative journalistic publications that explore global themes and to increase the visibility of and appreciation for Finnish development journalism.
Recipients for the award can be nominated until the end of November 2020. An independent panel of experts will select the winners in December, after which an award ceremony will be organised in early 2021. The winner will receive a EUR 3,000 cash prize, in addition to which a number of candidates will receive honourable mentions.
In 2020, the theme of the award is global migration. The winning piece of journalism may explore the causes of migration, its effects in both the source and destination countries, the experiences of individual migrants or migration as part of global sustainable development, for example.
Authors, publishers and audience representatives can nominate journalistic content published in Finnish, Swedish, Sami or English in 2019–2020 and targeting audiences in Finland for the award. The expert panel hopes to receive, in particular, nominations representing innovative forms of journalism from all fields of journalism.
