CHANGE TEXT / Journalism is at its best when it helps you understand the world and its complex phenomena. In 2022, the theme of the competition will be girls, women and gender equality. The call for candidates is open from 1.11. to 9.12.  

We are now looking for nominations for the 2022 Development Journalism Award.

In 2022, the theme will be women, girls and gender equality. The journalism that is rewarded can cover issues such as the status and rights of women and girls, their defence in developing countries or the progress made. Nominate an illuminating portrait, investigative journalism, television programme or even a podcast for the award.

Candidates are invited to submit responsible journalistic content published in media that adhere to the journalist’s guidelines between 1.12.2021 and 30.11.2022 and whose target audience is in Finland. The content must be published in Finnish, Swedish, Sami or English.

Anyone can submit nominations for the competition between 1 November and 9 December 2022 using the form on this page or by email to: [email protected].

The winner will be selected by an independent jury and announced in January 2023.

A cash prize of €3 000 will be awarded to the winner, who may also receive an honourable mention. The prize is taxable income for the recipient.

The jury considers development journalism to be content that addresses global sustainable development issues in a high-quality way, transforms public opinions and attitudes, and offers new perspectives on the realities of developing countries. Innovative forms of journalism from all areas of journalism are particularly encouraged. However, encyclopaedias are excluded from the competition.

The Finnish Red Cross, Viestintä ja kehitys -säätiö Vikes, Helsingin Sanomai Säätiö and Journalistiliitto have established the award to highlight high-quality and innovative journalistic publications on global issues and to increase the visibility and appreciation of Finnish development journalism. In 2021, the prize was won by Karoliina Knuuti and Mika Niskanen for their article “A carbon-neutral country with a carbon-averse population – are we outsourcing our emissions?”. The article appeared in World 4. March 2021. Honorary mentions were awarded to Ujuni Ahmed and Liselott Lindström.
